For many, springtime means blossoms, breezes, and lightweight, adorable clothing. A time where we enjoy frolicking in nature’s bounty whilst donning a myriad of bright colours. But what about those of us who don’t want to look delicate and dainty, nor blend in amongst the flowers? It looks like Jason Matlo’s wardrobe for Mother Nature is dark, seductive, and dressed to kill: She boldly dares spring to come hither.

With a collection meant to stand apart from all others this season, Jason Matlo’s Glamazon event literally did. It was hosted apart from BC Fashion Week’s base venue, instead at the edgy, luminescent Pop Opera nightclub, whose two-tone décor tied into the idea of a bold contrast. Red carpet, disco balls, and velvet ropes made an appropriate runway as mingling guests were enthralled by a collection that featured bouffant-haired models in outfits, dresses and gowns that were off the glamour charts. According to Matlo, it all was inspired by Barbie, Palm Beach, drag queens, and global jetsetters. It was definitely not a show to be missed!

The Spring/Summer 2009 collection was sophisticated, dramatic, and deftly carried modern takes on powerful mid-century looks. A versatile range of silhouettes were displayed, from empire maxi dresses to cinched waists to drop waists. Eyes were excited by pops of red and navy printed silk, hot pink, and luxe metallic fabrics interspersed with starkly beautiful and timeless black and white outfits. Pieces were accentuated by expertly constructed elements, including dolman sleeves, cowl necklines, asymmetry, and bias cutting, resulting in some fabulous and flirtatious draping. Shredded silk charmeuse as well as cascades and tiers of ruffles added incredible texture and made it extremely difficult not to reach out and touch. It is clear that details are where Jason Matlo wins international praise and sets the industry standard sky-high. All of his garments are designed and manufactured in Canada, ensuring stringent quality comparable to that of haute couturiers.

Aside from models walking down the runway, the audience was delighted and amazed by not one, but two sass-tacular drag performances that punctuated the outfits. Trixie Treat (of The Tranny Force) sent the the crowd into a frenzy, and her shimmy-shaking was perfectly complimented by her outfits, including one of Matlo’s ultra-glitzy black minidresses that was absolutely covered in swingy paillette sequins. It does make sense for a fashion designer who pushes the envelope to challenge us all to be a little more adventurous in our own Little Black Dresses, as well as adopt some deliciously dressy articles that easily mix into any closet, including high-waisted trousers, soft blouses, wrap shawls, and my personal favourite: gorgeous suiting with ruffled peplum details. Fantastic when worn separately or as an ensemble!

Jason Matlo brings his creative visions to life for ladies (and those who love ladies’ clothing) who are strong, sensual, and can wear elegance with confidence. Particularly for Glamazons. Prepare for boldness, Vancouverites. It’s okay to break the rules of fashion. Don’t be afraid of the dark, let’s get fierce!
