Hey, Stella! Hey, STELLA!

December 9th, 2008  |  Published in Blog

The famous “Hey, Stella!” line Marlon Brando delivers in the classic film A Streetcar Named Desire has got to be something that Stella McCartney hears quite a bit. But she is one hell of a lady– worthy of having her name screamed out while doing some serious shirt-ripping. CAREShe has taken over the fashion world with her own line as well as tried her hand at big-name design houses like Chloé and Gucci. She’s designed for celebrities from Gwyneth Paltrow to Madonna, while staying as true as possible to her environmentalist beliefs. No one can doubt that she is a fashion icon at an international level, although some did due to her quick rise to fame believed to be only a product of her father’s music legend status.

She has indeed proved herself over the years, however, and has now dived into the beauty and skincare products sea, as many designers tend to do, but she has made sure that her line is both good to Mother Earth and to those who seek luxury in their everyday lives. She released her CARE by Stella McCartney skincare line in 2007 and offers a luxurious line of products that are entirely organic, ecological, and use absolutely no chemicals or preservatives. The smell is very herb-y-ish and is somewhat strong, but it’s a fresh scent that awakens the senses. The packaging is sleek and neutral-coloured, giving it that natural feel. However, it did seem to be a bit excessive with the extra cardboard cylinders encasing the plastic containers and the many paper instructions. CAREYet, these cylinders are quite sturdy, recyclable, and could be used as containers for pencils, makeup brushes, as a way to wrap a gift, or perhaps to stuff underwear into as a way to save space when packing for a trip or making more room in a “delicates” drawer. It looks like everything a skincare product could do these days to be ecological CARE has been able to achieve.

CARE by Stella McCartney is available at Holt Renfrew and through Sephora’s website. Be warned, however, for it is not for the faint of heart or wallet: The 5 Benefits Moisturizing cream (50ml) goes for about $78; the elixirs (30ml/each) at $64, and the Nourishing Night & Day cream (50ml) at $80. The cleansers (200ml/each) are not too bad at around $35 each, but if one was to buy the entire lot separately it would cash out at about $500. Luxurious, indeed!
