The sun may be on my skin, but I already have fall fashions on my mind. Hints of fall trends have been making their appearance on fashionable folks since the fall 2010 fashion shows took place last spring. A leopard print tight paired with a leopard print shoe was spotted on Giovanna Battaglia, fashion editor at L’Uomo Vogue and favoured subject of street style photographers. Luxurious camel coats were also seen on both men and women, paired effortlessly with jeans or dress pants. If these are only hints of the looks we will be seeing come fall, Holt Renfrew’s new fall merchandise will make you even more excited for next season’s fashions.
Last Monday, Holt Renfrew presented their Fall 2010 Fashion Preview with Barbara Atkin, the Vice President of Fashion Direction. She guided us through the trends for womenswear and menswear, and then we watched them come to life as a group of Holt Renfrew staff modeled fall looks with items that were hot off the floor.
The key trends for womenswear include:
1) A return to classics. Staples such as a classic white shirt and trench coat will always be relevant in a woman’s wardrobe.
2) Animal inspiration. Fur and animal prints will have a strong presence this fall, be it in bold or subtle ways.
3) Cozy knits. Knitwear in different weights can be mixed and layered. Finer knit pieces can also be dressed up.
4) All things military. Military inspired details and colour influences give an extra edge to coats and accessories.
5) Crimson. Shades of red will punch up just about any outfit, whether it’s a glove, bag, or body-hugging dress.
The key trends for menswear include:
1) Battle gear. This is the menswear take on the military trend. Look for combat boots and shearling bombers.
2) Knits. Think big cozy cardigans and toques.
3) The jacket. In any and all fabrics, worn either casually or dressed up, this is a key piece in menswear this fall. The trick is to get imaginative with it.
4) Denim. Get creative with how you wear it. A not so new way both men and women are revisiting this season is mixing different washes of denim in one outfit.
For womenswear, hemlines are going to appear in two opposite lengths: short and to the floor. We will also be seeing a focus on the waist, particularly in a fit and flare silhouette (thank you Miuccia). Camel will be a strong colour this fall, but we will also see sooty darks such as deep purple, grey and midnight blue. Harvest inspired colours will be a warm counterpart to these tones (think burnt orange and the shades of leaves as they change colour).
Savor summer dressing while the hot days are still here, but keep an eye out for the fall fashions that are trickling into stores. It might only take one swishy long skirt or one killer pair of military-inspired Louboutins to make you wish that cool fall days would get here already.
