Theatre ProductsTheatre Products designers Akira Takeuchi and Tayuka Nakanishi presented their newest collection with faraway places in mind. Bombay and the gin Bombay Sapphire were centre points in their inspiration—a model even cradling a large bottle of the drink down the runway. Bombay Sapphire’s brand design plays with the popularity of gin in India in the times of the British Raj, and Takeuchi and Nakanishi’s designs seemed to draw inspiration from the same place. Straw bucket hats adorned with black netting were paired with sun dresses, skirt suits, and long, tiered dresses, all detailed with buttons, ruffles, tucks, and pleats that referenced styles of British wear from the end of the 1800’s to the turn of the century. Black and white tights in lace patterns ended in laced-up peep-toe heels, some dressed with pompoms and others with flowers and bows. Bombay Sapphire’s bottle design even made it onto some of the designs, the lettering printed across a white top and the logo itself appearing on the front of a skirt. Each ensemble seemed fit for a picnic out in the English countryside, although Takeuchi and Nakashini’s design style gave them that unpredictable twist that makes Theatre Products what it is.
