If you’ve never been to or heard of a Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets show, then you are surely missing out. Designers Cabaret Aki and Jackal Kuzu (above, in suits) really know how to put on a fashion show, especially one with a 10:30am start time. The party atmosphere was set from the get-go with disco balls, lights of every colour flashing on and off, and upbeat techno mashups filling the air. Guts Dynamite Cabarets

The show began to rainbow coloured spotlights shining through the haze to reveal a male model strutting out with a teased afro and sequined leggings. The next model to come out was accompanied by a whirlwind of jazz hands, leaps, and gyrating hips: a drag queen with long, razor-sharp hair enticed the audience and picked up the energy of the already pumped atmosphere. Other drag queens and dancers followed suit: clad in sequined booty shorts and matching jackets, they pranced and danced up and down the runway, interacting with audience members here and there. A long-limbed queen, made more so by ridiculously high platform heels, touched a greying business man invitingly on the shoulder, his frame comically shrinking back slightly in alarm.

Designs inspired by 70s disco dancing culture were sported by the non-dancing models, all in a black palette save one colourful fabric with a psychedelic pattern. Billowing sleeves and low backs ending in bouncy cowls were characteristic in dresses and tunics. The menswear was also loose, one model wearing a pair of voluminous pants with an equally ample sleeveless shirt. Tassels adorned drawstrings in jackets and the wider hems on ties.

The mere atmosphere of fun made the Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets collection more than just fabulous–it also made it completely wearable and approachable. However, the whirlwind of activity did take some attention away from the actual fashions, so looking back at the photos was necessary to get the complete picture of the collection. That being said, it’s clear that for Aki and Kuzu, fashion is not all about business, and they definitely see its lighter side–and work it.

WOW I love fashion shows that have a huge theatrical element. And with a name like Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets, it sounds like they know how to bring it!!
