New York Fashion Week Begins
Words by Annabell.
September 10th: the first official day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City. 10am. BCBGMAXAZRIA. Tent.
For those who are unfamiliar with New York Fashion Week, on-site there are three runways: The Tent, being the largest, then The Promenade, then The Salon. BCBG was my first show, sitting near the runway along with my new schoolmates: Amanda Bynes, Amy Astley and a little “Sexy Can I” with Ray J.
Like most other seasons, the show was a long list of colourful pink and blue dresses. The models wore a very simple beauty concept with tucked hair behind the shoulders. Because I am a huge fan of BCBG, there were some must-have pieces in this collection, however there were also some pieces that I think should have been left behind 3 seasons ago–you know, like the Victoria Beckham purple mistake. Why must designers repeat this in so many versions?
At the end of the show, after the models did the final walk and the designer poked his head out, I witnessed the Anna Wintour dash: as soon as the designer waved, she ran. I now understand the obsession with this woman.
Next show was Davidelfin in The Salon. People’s Revolution put on the show, with Kelly Cutrone dressed in head-to-toe black, with mean shades on–exactly how I pictured her. The set had layers and layers of white fringe curtains that the models walked through onto the runway. Male and female models with orange or natural hair and bright teal makeup. The first looks were a green/blue colour with splashes of white and contrasting colourful shoes. The looks slowly went from green to blue with sparkly bright blue heels. All the looks were very basic and simple; however, the colours and fabric were stylized to have a very edgy feel. Then the designer came out with matching orange hair.
Third show of the day was Duckie Brown in The Promenade. Menswear collection with a mixture of plaids and colours and textures. Very light vintage feel: shorts with bows and high-waisted shorts. I have a hard time believing that many men could pull this off. However, the show was well-balanced with some creative pieces but also some classics.
Last show was Ports 1961 back in The Tent. The backdrop and runway had a pattern of rocks and sand and the first models contrasted with bright reds and slicked-back hair. Each piece in this collection I wanted to have. The detail in the Ports collection was stunning, pieces with back drapery and patterns and bits that looked like rope–it was just amazing–I think the entire audience was in awe. The models walked out so firmly and structured; up and down one side of the runway, then repeated on the other side. Then out came Amanda Laine, at only 17 this Canadian model has been… everywhere. She is stunning, definitely one to google.
Fashion’s Night Out: people parties, free drinks and appys, limited sales–who shops like that? The main purpose of Fashion’s Night Out is a global effort to get people back into the stores and SHOP, which some people did. However, it seemed like more of a night of celebrity-following, designer-meeting and people-bumping. Needless to say, it was amazing. Nearly ever participating store had some kind of appearance or performance. The list is too large. There were people everywhere, dressed in amazing outfits and costumes out in New York to celebrate fashion.
