As if we didn’t already hear the word “sustainable” various times throughout the day, here are two great opportunities to use it and to put its value to work: at once loved threads and the frock swap. Danielle Ow and Marjolyn Ustaris created these two concepts approximately one year ago when they felt a twinge of concern for the amount of clothing they had and did not wear. Consignment shops
are all too ready to take said clothes off your hands and make you a bit of profit, but Marjolyn and Danielle decided to do their own thing—hence the creation of once loved threads—their very own previously-loved-clothing online store. “Currently we sell all of our own clothing, but anybody who wants to sell their clothes on our website is more than welcome,” state the girls, “We came up with the name [once loved threads] purely from the concept of the website itself: ‘once loved, always loved‘. We loved these clothes and want someone else to get the same enjoyment out of them, all while participating in a little bit of sustainable retail.”
Click on over to once loved threads and find snapshots of apparel ranging from jeans to sneakers and purses–all in great condition and very stylish. The fun doesn’t stop there, however: the second of Danielle and Marjolyn’s projects, the frock swap, is a fun event where you get to shop for fabulous “new” clothes for free. Created as an annual event, the frock swap is only on its second year but has gotten great feedback since. “We’ve gotten a lot of comments from people telling us what a great idea it is and how excited they are to participate,” Marjolyn and Danielle say, “It’s a chance for people to shop for free, so it’s pretty obvious why people are looking forward to it.”
At the frock swap “free” means that you bring clothes from your own closet (in accordance with the guidelines) and then get to take the same amount home with you. It all started with some fun amongst friends for
Marjolyn and Danielle, but instead became an event that everyone can enjoy. “[The frock swap has] turned into a pretty good public event so it was only natural to make it an annual thing,” says Danielle, “Having a clothing swap like this encourages people to recycle their clothes, save some cash, and donate to a good cause. This year, all unclaimed clothing will be donated to WISH Drop-in Women’s Shelter.”
Sustainable AND socially conscious. You just can’t go wrong with these two ladies and lucky for us the frock swap is just around the corner with its second appearance happening this March 29th at Box Studios. Do check it out, but remember to register by March 20th!
