String Magazine is really on a roll. Their one year anniversary a success, they are well on their way to a second year full of new coverage, and not only local, but international as well. String plans on covering either London Fashion Week or Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York aside from our own BC Fashion Week and Vancouver Fashion Week. Readers will get a taste of what is happening in fashion outside of Canada, and will be able to compare first hand how we differ. Additionally, print is in the horizon for String, but they will start slow and work their way into regular print runs on a tbd basis. Stay connected with updates by entering your email address above (top, right).
But for now, String’s successes have been accounted for with String Magazine Spotlight, where more than 200 of Vancouver’s finest fashion peeps were to be found mingling at the Met on June 26. DJ Tarek started off the night with upbeat tunes to get the energy on high and got the crowd feeling the upbeat vibes.
The show got on its way with music accompaniment by local band Accost, each of the five designers’ collections strutting to a different song. The timing of each collection shown and the music was uncanny, the first model appearing just as the music’s intro ended and the base kicked in and the music finishing just a few seconds after the last model disappeared behind the curtains. Accost’s music was gushed over by many of the attendees—their sound so together and expert it’s hard to believe this was only their 5th show together.
Pauline Siu’s flora&fauna opened the fashion show, revealing her Fall/Winter ’09 line for all to see. Her designs have a sweet quality that is extremely wearable and unique. Models sported Siu’s jersey knits with her signature silk-screened designs that called homage to sea life.
Marcy Ross’ Morena Clothing followed: delicate, one-of-a-kind tops and skirts made their way onto the runway. Pieces of fur and fabric adorned her designs, which were complimented by Kim Lowe’s exquisite leather bags, a well-known bag designer from Victoria (available at Addiction in Victoria).
Also from the Island, Nixxi designer Jada-lee Watson showed off her Fall/Winter ’09 collection third in the show. Simple, yet brilliantly-detailed designs in blues, blacks, and greys made for a stylish collection perfectly fit for the West Coast woman with style.
Drew William, with his self-titled line, gave attendees a treat by showing his Spring/Summer ’10 collection for the first time. Casual yet innovative, attendees were witness to his newest designs and introduced to his unique twist on menswear. A crowd favourite was a slouch pocket detail that appeared in a few different pants and shorts, as well as a jumpsuit styled comfortably with a white cowl-neck shirt and sneakers.
El Homenaje a la Paz, a special line made of embroidered and hand-made fabrics from South America, was presented by Alicia Grunert from Chapel Couture. Mini dresses and short jumpsuits with traditional South American designs graced the runway, as well as flowing knee-length dresses in vibrant colours and belted at the waist.
Photographers had their fill photographing the models and the Accost band members—not to mention the many fashionable individuals present. These stylish event-goers included local stylists, makeup artists, boutique owners, bloggers and writers, fashion students and other industry members.
New friends were made, congratulatory toasts were called, and new beginnings were celebrated together. Looking forward to another fantastic year of loving local fashion!
