String Magazine Spotlight

Words by Maria.

One whole year has gone by and it seems like merely a second. It’s peculiar how good times always pass us by faster than bad times, so String founders have taken the hint and decided to throw a party to celebrate.

On June 26th, String Magazine Spotlight: celebrating one fantastic year of loving local fashion, will be bringing together fashion designers from around the West Coast and complimenting them with a dose of home-grown musicians.

Drew William, flora&fauna, Chapel Couture by Alicia Grunert, Morena Clothing, and Nixxi will show off their latest designs, and one or two may even be sneaking us a peek of their Spring/Summer ‘10 collections.

Flora&fauna’s Pauline Siu will soothe us with her gentle designs, reminding us of the beautiful nature around us with her sustainable fibers and practices. Drew William, an Emily Carr honours graduate, will wow us with his innovative menswear collection, challenging us to think outside the box. Alicia Grunert will introduce her label Chapel Couture with her El Homage de Paz collection, a collection made entirely from vintage handmade fabric from mainly South America. Victoria’s Morena Clothing designer Marcy Ross will send us to faraway places with her whimsical designs. And last but certainly not least, Nixxi’s Jada-lee Watson will grace us with her versatile and eco-conscious designs that not only make women who wear them feel good on the outside, but on the inside as well.

All these fashions will be accompanied by live music as models strut to Vancouver band Accost’s melodies. Accost is “a powerful new wave/electro-rock assembly embodied in 4 like-minded individuals,” says Nathan Stafford of Music In Productions, “they are a melding of melodic composition and intense instrumental precision, escalated by sultry, entrancing vocals.” Chantelle on the mike, Blair on keyboards, Uway on bass, and Vik on drums will take us for a ride with their own set following the fashion show. Expect a heart-pounding performance with the unmistakable energy of a raw Crystal Castles or M83.

After the fashion designers and Accost have had their moment in the spotlight, DJ Trevor Risk will take over and finish off the evening with his set “Summer Jamz ‘09″.

Recently reopened and revamped, Metropole will provide the venue to this very special event. Its doors will open at 7:00pm to the show starting at 8:00pm. And speaking of doors, the door prize of the evening will be a surprise piece by jewellery line Parts by Heather. And to top it all off on a good note, a silent auction benefitting a local food bank will feature art T-shirts by Laure-Elaine Côté.

Hair and makeup for the lovely models (by Lexington Models) will be provided by Bangtown Hair Saloon and Kerrisdale boutique Jules & Eve.

String Magazine Spotlight is guaranteed to be packed with the cream of the crop of the local fashion scene, as well as all those who love their fashion and music in equal doses in one night.
