Although already well into the summer, Vancouver could certainly do with several more weeks of this mild, warm weather. The early “back-to-school” displays in stores will be ignored, and the billowy dresses, fedoras with rolled-up trousers, and cute vintage swimsuits will shown off at the beaches for as long as possible. The city’s energy is on an all-time high and this month will reflect that on String Magazine’s August issue: the New Issue.
The New Issue is a bounty of stories full of fresh and innovative ideas coming from all corners of the local fashion industry. It is an offering of all that is new: whether it’s a new way of putting on jewellery or a new way to think of style.
Below is a sneak-peek of some of the features that will be published throughout the month listed in the order they will be released in.
Bandida: photographed by Zenaida Kwong. Shot completely on film with a vintage tilt-shift camera, Bandida shows us that new doesn’t always mean shiny and modern. Behind the scenes video included.
Get to know Amy G. of Lizbell, the star of August’s editorial, Bandida. At only 15, this fresh, young face promises to make her mark internationally, starting with New York, where she is heading this fall.
Fashionable style as tradition. Two different ideas seen in the same light.
Other than having the French word for “new” twice in its name, nouvelle nouvelle contrast new and old by carrying vintage pieces as well as contemporary lines.
Quality isn’t compromised by the fact that Sappho Cosmetics uses entirely natural ingredients in its products, something that is quite commendable for an all-natural cosmetic line.
Michael Bernard Fitzgerald states simply that he just plays music, but it’s obvious when listening to his songs that he is much more than just someone who “plays music”.
In this month’s featured books we learn that there is a different way of photographing famous personas, of using textiles, and of looking at jewellery. We delve into the world of fashion at its most extreme and explore a range of up-and-coming designers.
Layers of meaning conceal themselves behind the simple lines of Hidden Spectrum’s limited-run collection. This local atelier not only plunges into the fashion side of art, but also tries its hand at collaborative projects in photography, film, and installations.
New designers get a helping hand from Generation Next, a competition created for start-up designers where the winner receives a cornucopia of prizes geared towards aiding the growth of his of her line.
Falling Forward: photographed by Zenaida Kwong. With Fall approaching and school starting up soon, it’s only fitting that a back-to-school editorial be injected into the mix. Janice D. from Mode Models channels the excitement, yet melancholy that comes with starting a new school year.
