As the team headed out on a gorgeous sunny Sunday afternoon to shoot the “rebirth” beauty editorial, we had the highest hopes for our day: a serene afternoon on the beach with a gorgeous setting, a stunning model, and an arsenal of beautiful fabrics. Little did we know, we were in for a wind storm so intense, that it turned out the rebirth happened within each of us that day — and it was born of being quite literally more than cool. It was as if we fell in love with what we do all over again; knowing that we could — and wanted to — continue on in spite all of the obstacles that came our way. It was a rebirth of our passions, so to speak.

First props go to our brave model, Charlotte. You know you are working with a true professional, when she is shivering, her eyes are watering, her lips are turning blue, she’s fighting with her clothing in the wind while posing beautifully and looking fierce, and all the while knowing that she has about 30 seconds to nail it before the blankets come back on. I haven’t seen anyone work that hard, in such harsh conditions, in so little time, without breathing a word of discontentment. Hats off to a true soldier. Charlotte began that day as a model and was reborn a supermodel.

Next to our talented photographer Jamie Mann, who in turn, had mere seconds for each look to shoot Charlotte. Imagine: a wind blowing so hard, that debris was flying in the background, the model’s hair is flying around in the foreground, and the only semblance of warmth was in a coffee cup that flew the coop as soon as it was set down as if it were the least crazy of all of us. Jamie’s images capture the feel of that day perfectly, and with a certain beautiful serenity to it all. In the end, that is what we all worked and hoped for. Thanks be to Jamie for being a photographer extraordinaire, frozen hands and all. Some might say that he was reborn the speediest photographer on the West Coast that day!

And Alexia, the stylist. Yes, she arrived that fateful Sunday with a garment bag full of beautiful things. But even more impressive was that she managed to tie a rope into a sexy top, zip up the tiniest of zippers, and place intricate jewellery in intricate ways with fingers that I can only imagine felt like 10 little icicles. Not only that, but she was the protective shield between the model and the storm, wielding blankets and jackets galore with one arm, fixing wardrobe malfunctions with the other. Alexia was reborn a storm trooper stylist extraordinaire that day.

As for me, I was the model hugging, tear wiping, makeup applying Kleenex rep that day, and if I had to say what I was re-born as, it would be a more appreciative version of myself, knowing that I’m lucky enough to work with such committed, passionate people. My war-buddies, partners in beauty and fashion, willing to take a brutal slap from nature for the sake of bringing you a beautiful picture to gaze at.

Thank you, Charlotte, Jamie Mann, Alexia Anastasiou, and the beautiful city of Vancouver. We love you.
